Locals stump up $30k for Traction community

More than $30,000 was raised for community program, TRACTION, at its annual Canapés in the Shed fundraiser last week.Upwards of 150 guests attended the event, which was held at Shed 27 in Capalaba and emceed by television personality, Sofie Formica.Money raised will be fed back into the program, which supported 135 students from seven schools across Brisbane last year.TRACTION founder Sandy Murdoch said the outstanding fundraising effort would allow the organisation to expand its reach with the opening of new workshops.“Donors displayed extreme generosity towards the program through the more than $30,000 raised,” he said.“All guests demonstrated a real desire to help the students, almost doubling last year’s fundraising result of $18,000.00.“Our goal is to provide 288 places through the TRACTION program next year at our 3 workshops located in Capalaba, Moorooka and West End. We’ll also be kicking off some exciting affiliate partnerships that will see the TRACTION program introduced to new communities and even more young people in need participating.”The TRACTION program enables participants to restore, repurpose or customise bicycles, small engines and motorbikes while developing lifelong skills, experience and confidence.Mr Murdoch said students were reporting multi-faceted benefits from participating in the TRACTION program.“The schools we serve are delighted that attendance rates and results are continuing to improve,” he said.“The young people who are participating in the program are showing pride in what they have learnt, this is a real indication of focus, respect and teamwork. Some are securing work experience opportunities and entering into apprenticeships that provide future career pathways.”“I personally obtain the most satisfaction from the smiles on kids’ faces when they achieve in new ways, learn new skills and are partaking in something they love.”
